The idea to develop LeoBase appeared long time ago and began successfully to put into practice in spite of big time and financial expenditure. Between 1989 and 1993 the team of future developers of LeoBase developed different custom-built information projects. The experience of working at these projects showed that DBMS which existed at that time did not meet many requirements. Therefore, in 1992 a decision was taken to start developing out own DBMS LeoBase.

In 1993 a database division was created in one of engineering firms (In Minsk). This division consisted of LeoBase’s developers. This group was working in 1994 on tasks in the field of cartography. Preliminary tests showed that it was very difficult to accomplish tasks with the use of DBMS existed at that time (in particular Oracle 6.0) because of a low processing speed. Therefore, a decision was taken to analyze the possibility of using LeoBase as an alternative solution of the task. During 2 months a serious research was carried out and its results showed that LeoBase had been 6-900 times faster than DBMS Oracle 6.0 in data retrieval in the same conditions.

Then LeoBase was developing and its viability was tested in practice. More than 2000 clients appreciated LeoBase’s capabilities which had been realized in information retrieval systems JurInform and BusinessInform . These products were successfully promoted in the Republic of Belarus. LeoBase’s technologies allowed SoftInform Company in its time to become a leader of information technology market.

Since then much water has flowed under the bridges. However, even today the idea to create DBMS is still very actual. If there was no lack of finance, the creation of LeoBase would be a matter of time. At the moment we posses improved algorithms of technologies which were tested in practice and a number of new solutions in the field of searching, storing and processing information. Their implementation will allow increasing 5 and more times  characteristics of 32 bit version of LeoBase.

Of course, such serious project will require more time and investment than separate software products. Moreover, a considerable volume of investment in LeoBase’s development will be connected with expenses on its promotion.

At the moment we cannot demonstrate DBMS, but in support of our words we are ready to demonstrate capabilities of information retrieval systems JurInform-98 realized on the basis of LeoBase. Unfortunately, we have only Russian version of the product, because JurInform was positioned for Belorussian market and contained statutory acts of the Republic of Belarus). However, JurInform permits evaluating quality implementation and processing speed of integrated technologies. Though if you are interested in this project, we are ready to develop alpha version of LeoBase during a rather short period of time and with the assumption of little investment. This version will demonstrate all its capabilities.  

It should be noted that all unique technologies and know-how which will be implemented in LeoBase will be patented. At the moment we have got 3 patents and we are preparing another 10 patent applications.

The implementation of improved DBMS LeoBase is a very promising project by several reasons. Firstly, it has a rather wide range of application, secondly, there is a little number of companies working in this domain. All these factors result in the excess of demand over supply. Therefore, the entry into the DBMS market with a quality product may make a considerable breakthrough.
